Hi-Def Streaming Video via P2P Up Next

MoveDigital and Neokast join forces to bring HD streaming to the masses

Through MoveDigital’s high speed online delivery service Neokast will deliver HD streaming in real-time to every broadband connection

CHICAGO, IL March 27, 2007 – Neokast LLC, which streams live broadcasts and on-demand content over the Internet via advanced P2P protocols, has formed a partnership with MoveDigital, Inc., an online digital delivery service, to provide intelligent high-quality P2P video streaming to the masses. By leveraging the power of MoveDigital’s Volumetric Network Access Technology, Neokast will offer high-def quality streaming at a cost that is dramatically lower than typical CDNs, or even grid-networks. The two companies expect the collaboration to open the door to record-breaking levels of simultaneous viewers of high quality streaming video over the Internet.

On March 15th, 2007 Mark Smith, President of MoveDigital was introduced to Neokast through an interview by Bob Cringely of the two Neokast co-founders, Adam Johnson and Stefan Birrer. The interview was posted on the Technology Evangelist website by Benjamin Higginbotham, an avid and well respected high-def streaming guru. Higginbotham stated, “I think MoveDigital’s HD distribution network is a natural fit for Neokast. Neokast is a technology that can change television as we know it. I believe MoveDigital will help enable Neokast to deliver their content to millions of consumers quickly and seamlessly.”

MoveDigital and Neokast collided last week at Pulvermedia’s Video on the Net conference in San Jose. The two companies immediately understood the benefits of collaboration. Cringely also sees the possibilities, “Neokast has the potential to change forever how television is carried on the Internet, but its greatest challenge in dealing with large scale content providers will be in going from second to third gears. MoveDigital servers can add that extra nudge needed to ensure than an HBO or an NBC’s HD content is available seamlessly — and fluidly — over the net. It’s a good combination.”

MoveDigital, founded in 1999, refined its expertise in infrastructure and file delivery by providing on-demand services for CNET’s GameSpot, CNET’s Download.com, Live365.com, Digital River and GameSpy’s FilePlanet. MoveDigital currently provides acceleration of BitTorrent downloads via a patent pending technology called P2P Smartseed. Invented by Gary Lerhaupt, the feature allows publishers to control when MoveDigital contributes torrent download acceleration based on how many seeds are currently in the mix. MoveDigital plans to work with Neokast to provide a similar service to their peer-to-peer network. As Neokast delivers higher quality files with larger bit rates, the MoveDigital network will come in to make sure users have a high quality experience. MoveDigital will explore the use of their existing patent on volumetric network access to enable Neokast to compensate peers for their contribution to the network.

The collaboration evolved from a few friendly conversations with Frank Huebbers, Lead Web Engineer at Neokast, and Noah Clemons, Neokast’s Chief Information Architect. Clemons really broke the ice when he came to the MoveDigital booth and said: “MoveDigital is very cool. These days I will only watch high-def”. Over the next day Smith met Neokast’s CFO Jim Johnson, Neokast’s CTO Andreas Schuler, and Stefan Birrer Neokast’s Chief Software Architect and co-founder. At the VON show’s conclusion Smith met with Adam Johnson, Neokast’s President and co-founder, over a meal at Gordon Biersch in downtown San Jose among the loud din of the fans watching the NCAA Road to the Final Four. “Despite the noise and the fatigue of three days at a trade show, we came to terms on how we could work together and had the Neokast software up and running on MoveDigital servers by 2am,” Smith explained.

Both Neokast and MoveDigital company philosophies intersect around the belief that everyone should have equal access to mass communication. Keeping the costs down will help advance the development of emerging production genres and eliminate the era of the mass media gatekeeper.

MoveDigital Day 1 round up

July 18th, 2006

Today was a busy day of course. There definitely seems to be interest and we definitely look forward to adding on and improving our service so it’s even better. Here are some highlights, all really positive except geeknewscentral was disappointed. My reply to Todd who runs geeknews and was in the past nice enough to include Prodigem in his book, continues below.

My response for Todd Cochrane at geeknewscentral. I wanted to include this on your blog, but wasn’t able to add a comment. In general I think this is just a series of misunderstandings and I hope we can work it out. Continued…

MoveDigital Launches Pay As You Go Service

July 18th, 2006

MoveDigital(R) Announces New Pay As You Go Digital Delivery Service with Patented Metering

Senator John Edwards and the Popular Videoblog Rocketboom Are Drawn in to MoveDigital By Never Before Seen Features Such as Mobile Phone Video Publishing and Social Bandwidth Sharing

PALO ALTO, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–July 18, 2006– MoveDigital, Inc., a privately-held company with offices in Palo Alto, today announced the availability of their new pay as you go digital distribution service at http://www.movedigital.com. The service makes it easy for anyone to share files in any digital format on a worldwide basis and eliminates monthly bills, contracts, and credit checks. Completely free 30-day trials, no credit card required, are available and include one gigabyte of storage and ten gigabytes of bandwidth.

Senator John Edwards has become an early fan and customer adopting both the mobile phone publishing as well as experimenting with BitTorrent(TM) peer-to-peer publishing for the first time. “We welcome all voices at MoveDigital. Grass roots distribution is what democracy is all about,” said Gary Lerhaupt, Principal Developer, MoveDigital, Inc.Rocketboom(TM) was an early customer of the peer-to-peer technology prior to MoveDigital’s acquisition of Prodigem’s software assets earlier this year.

MoveDigital is excited to have Rocketboom on board. “Rocketboom represents a shining example of creativity in on-line video publishing,” said Mark Smith, President, MoveDigital, Inc.Customers begin using the service by uploading their files into their account with their choice of MoveDigital’s drag and drop software upload utility (Windows (R) or Mac OS X), or by using the MoveDigital web interface. Once added to the customer’s account, the file is available for reliable and fast download via the Internet.

MoveDigital’s service is based on a unique method of providing network access. The company received patent number 7,069,329 in May, 2006 from the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Bandwidth in the form of gigabytes transferred is only deducted from a customer’s account when the entire direct download has reached its destination. This spares customers the expense of paying for partial transfers of their files and provides a solid metric for tracking purposes.

Once files are uploaded customers simply click “mobilize” to convert files to the 3GP mobile phone format so audiences are able to watch the content on third generation (3G) mobile phones currently available from Sprint(R) or Verizon(R).

Customers who want to share their files on a peer-to-peer basis can click “torrent” to easily make their content available via BitTorrent.

Each file uploaded into a user’s MoveDigital account also comes equipped with an Adobe(R) Flash(R) based web widget. The web widget allows easy sharing and posting of MoveDigital file links on websites, blogs and social networking services. The widget provides a convenient direct download link to the file and BitTorrent link if it exists. The web widget contains the download count for the file as an indication of popularity, and also includes a “Share” button which enables other users to directly add bandwidth into the publisher’s account. This invention is known as social bandwidth sharing.

MoveDigital is designed for universal appeal from bloggers wishing to share files to enterprises of all sizes looking to remove monthly bills and reduce the cost and complexity of Internet file transfer. Senator John Edwards now offers mobile video downloads at http://mobile.movedigital.com/johnedwards/ and BitTorrent and direct downloads at http://download.movedigital.com/johnedwards/, and the world’s most popular videoblog Rocketboom is using the service to enable peer-to-peer file sharing and mobile downloads of its daily recordings.
